Fashion Flashback: August Favs

Well it’s about that time for my favourites outfits during the past month.

Outfit 1

IMG_20140829_093640[1]

[ Goodwill top, RW.CO blue skinny pants, Gold Tassle Necklace from Jewels of Yours, Nine West Pointed black heel, and a beige blazer unknown ]

I remember getting ready for this day, and not feeling too hot.

Those days when nothing makes you feel like you look good.

So I just wanted to throw on a pair of pants and a blazer. But I also wanted to style my gold tassel necklace right. I needed to do this necklace c/o of Jewels of Yours justice with a well styled look; I did this with a low cut shirt. And that’s how this look came together. I got a lot of positive feedback of this outfit on instagram. Just goes to show you that how you feel may not necessarily reconcile with how people see you!

Always thankful for the love I get from my followers!! 🙂

 Outfit 2

IMG_20140821_102156[1]

[ Goodwill top, skirt, and heels that are nine west. Styled with a chunky pearl and jewel necklace ]

I choose this outfit because I am proud of it!

This was the only new article of clothing I got this month. It was part of my “make it your own thrift post.”

You can check out the before and after here:

https://babytfashiondiaries.com/2014/08/21/thrift-thursday-part-2/

Outfit 3

IMG_20140808_093737[1]

[ H&M checkered dress layered with a star wars tee, H&M b&W belt and my chunk pearl-jewel necklace. lastly my goodwill booties and American Eagle shades ]

I just adore this outfit. It is funky, and cute.

Plus you can totally see how stoked I am to be wearing it and that it is a friday!

Just because it screams fun. This outfit made my list.

Outfit 4

IMG_20140828_093627[1]

[ Agate Necklace from Jewels of Yours, Naked Zebra red top, Goodwill dress pant, H&M white belt, and Goodwill Ninewest Peeptoe Heels ]

Usually when I wear dress pants especially wide legged ones, I feel stuffy.

But paired with my relaxed red tank and my Agate Necklace.

It added more attitude to a rather conservative look.

Which is your favourite?!

Branding Yourself

Paying $400 to Brand Myself.

Once upon a time my heart was stolen by Valentino.

He came across my news feed, and won me over with his blushing colour and his classy bow ties.

imagejpeg_2[1] PicsArt_1407609847740[1]

Meet Mr. Valentino.

My heart still aches that I do not own this beautiful bag.

But my ultimate decision was to walk away.

As you may have guessed the price of this beauty was the decision factor.

Branding myself with this bag would sting my budget in a hard way.

And I ultimately decided that the beauty wasn’t worth the pain.

While tormenting over this decision at home and at work.

I was given some rather interesting advice.

If the bag is worth more than what you would carry inside it…then you can’t afford it.

I already knew I couldn’t afford the item.

But I guess the poetic wording of this statement had turned a light bulb on in my head.

Why do people buy brands?

There are 3 logical reasonings to do so:

1. Confidence that the brand represents quality

2. Keeping up with the Joneses mentality

3. Loyalty ie. emotional attachment to brand

My desire was strictly to do with number 2.

To be able to say I own a Beautiful Valentino bag.

But that’s silly.

To me that would be like those people that flash money that don’t have any.

fanned money

Cue the money selfie.

If at some point in time I could walk around easily with disposable money of $400 in my bag.

The value of Valentino would be justified.

But until then… Me, my thrifted bag, and my fabulous self are walking away.

End Rant.

July Favourites

Another Month has come and gone.

I hadn’t done any shopping in such a long time with so many recent large purchases in our household.

As such I’ve had to get very creative not to repeat any outfits.

I’m not going to lie- its getting more and more difficult.

A couple times this month I’ve left the house in an outfit I just wasn’t quite happy with.

I guess it was a hit and miss month.

Cause I absolutely adore these July fits.

PicsArt_1404134786640[1]

Can I just say this whole outfit minus the belt and tights are from goodwill. #mindblown

I picked this skirt up in June. I absolutely adore it. It gives my work fits a baby doll feel.

PicsArt_1404998353139[1]

This outfit has my favourite colour combination purple and blue.

Paired with the low bun and curls- I feel like it has a spanish feel.

Especially with the curvy silhouette showcased.

I felt sexy in this outfit!

PicsArt_1405604267756[1]

Professional, cute, and girly- the perfect work fit!

The long curls with the lace and flirty skirt- all scream very girly.

The cherry on top is the peep toe heel.

How to Thrift

I by no means consider myself a thrifting expert.

But I have been known to find some really great pieces.

And known for putting together some outfits that would make you look twice.. knowing most of it came from thrift stores.

———————–

Before I even had my first adult experience thrifting- I researched….as I’ve been known to do.

I googled the wealthiest part of the city searched the nearby “good will.”

My logic being that the wealthiest can buy the best material, and best brands …and well donate them near their home.

Choosing the nearest thrift store to your home, although convenient, may not be the best strategy.

Once you’ve set your targets on the perfect location. How do you find the diamond in the rough?

Personally I take my time. I go through it all.

Although the employees try to keep the store organized either by size, colour, and type of clothing. The reality is stuff gets lost, misplaced, or even hidden-Yes hidden. People may find an item that they don’t want to purchase at that moment and will hide the item within a different section. Obviously this item was good enough to hide, meaning its good enough to take the time to find!

Sorry Ladies- You snooze you lose.

Now of course it would be mind numbingly long to inspect each item in the entire store.

So to speed up the process- learn to keep a keen eye.

If you don’t think you could spot that shining diamond in the rough.

Practice.

Go though your closet; take the time to really take a look.

Feel the material, notice the stitching, and how it falls off the hanger.

Once you know what you are looking for- it will stand out amongst the cotton oversized tee-shirts at the thrift store.

The trick is to scan the racks.

—-

Once you find something. Be sure to look it over.

Inspect for imperfections, tears, missing buttons, broken zippers, stains…yes I said it.

Some things people donate, maybe should have been donated to the garbage bin.

I once found a pair of bebe high-waisted shorts with the security tag still on it.

like really?

You know what- I bought them.

Doesn’t mean I’m a thief right.?!

I just went home and researched how to disassemble a magnetic security tag without ruining the item of clothing.

You really can find anything on youtube.

The point of this story?

Some items can be fixed.

Sure it may be missing a button…

but you can go out choose your own buttons and create a completely unique piece to your own design!

Also little fixes like stitching, and re-zippering all are very budget friendly.

….

But some things sometimes cannot be fixed- like fit.

I don’t know how many times I’ve found a great pair of heels only to be tragically disappointed when THIS  Cinderella wasn’t so lucky.

But that’s the game of thrifting.

You may be the ugly sister for one charming item…but then you look twelve o’clock and find the shoe that fits.

Did you love that labored metaphor? haha

….

Lastly I’ve leave you with some of my recent thrifted outfits.

Shorts to the Office

As a lady you get to have a little more flexibility in the office compared to men.

As we wear skirts and dresses to the office; it isn’t abnormal to show a little leg at the office. Thus shorts are no different.

But be sure to wear the correct style!

The correct style is:

1. Material

Just as a jean pants or skirt is unacceptable, so are jean shorts.

Go for a Trouser or Bermuda short material

Example: H&M Bermuda Short

2. Length

The short should fall between 3/4 to knee length

knee length short 34 knee short

Although a mid-thigh short can look incredibly chic.

Not for the office, my friends. Not for the office.

Save that outfit for an out of office chic look.

Here are some examples of how I styled shorts for the office to get your creative-styling-juices flowing!

PicsArt_1406072748596[1]

PicsArt_1406072784845[1]

Although I like to offset the skin showing on my legs with a long sleeve.

On one of Toronto’s hottest days I also styled shorts without sleeves.

PicsArt_1406073023467[1]

If you still feel uneasy wearing shorts to work.

It is a great idea for those casual fridays- mix it up!

Who says you have to sweat those summer days?

Be the epitome of cool success in a chic short outfit.

Asian Impression Photography

I’ve followed @asianimpression ie. Teban on instagram for quite some time.

His instagram is dedicated to asian beauty and fashion.

I am never disappointed with his posts. He even adds witty and inspirational captions to each photo.

What’s not to love about that?

You can check out his work here:

or his instagram:

Teban had decided to come to toronto to do collaborations with some of his friends from Instagram.

He contacted me to do a 3 outfit photoshoot.

I got to say I was a little shocked.

1. little ol me? really?!

2. umm.. Im not asian? haha … luckily I was one of the few rare exceptions

3. Oh crap. Im not in the shape I would love to be for such an opportunity.

But you know what it was an amazing opportunity that such insecurities would not hold me back!

I was pleasantly surprised that Teban choose to shoot in Kensington Market with its beautiful colours and culture.

I thought that it was such a perfect setting.

Starting A New Job

Starting a New Job

Well this is it- I am finally starting my new job and I couldn’t be more excited!

I applied to so many jobs I couldn’t even keep count. But this was the only job I REALLY wanted and after two interviews..I.actually.got.it! When I got the acceptance call, I literally jumped for joy…and had a conversation with my man of elated disbelief at our big break.

Now I actually have to prove they made the right decision.

No worries, I love to learn- Nerd Status…say whaat?! That is all you are expected to do in the first couple weeks of starting a new job. Learning the new culture, what the company does and how they do it, and lastly learn what is expected of you.

Bring it on!

Learning something new also brings nerves as well- there is a lot of uncertainty. This is the place where you will spend most of your time. The people working there will become like family, but will they be a cozy-close-nit-family or a dysfunctional one?

To find this out means a lot of networking- meeting new coworker friends and who’s who. Learning who are good allies, and learning how to navigate relationships with everyone in the office. Such as learning not to talk to the boss before their first cup of coffee in the morning.  This networking will help you get a clear perspective of the culture of the office like the unwritten rules such as where everyone has their lunch or smoke break, who does the dishes…and what not!

All this uncertainty and expectations for success = stress.

And unfortunately…

Stress = Weight Gain

After every major change in life- it has been known to cause weight gain.

New relationship- gain some happy weight…start college- put some party weight on…start a new job- stress weight…get married- happy weight again…have children- of course you gained weight…but surprisingly most of the time the father does as well. Any major change in life often leads to weight gain.

So of course I’m a little worried about falling off track of my new fitness journey.

I am doing really well. But I know that I will have less time to work out, and more stress unwillingly consuming my energy.

The stakes are high to say the least.

I’m relying on self- determination and support from my man to see me through.

Do’s and Dont’s of Starting a New Job

I’ve read a few articles in anticipation of my first day, and here are three do’s and dont’s I found helpful to pass on to you.

Do’s

1. First Impressions are still important!

Just because you landed the job, you still have to back up all those wonderful things you said about yourself in the interview process. You still want to stand out with success- it is not expected for anyone to come in and be successful at the job right away. But small wins while learning are definitely good. To be successful you must understand what the company deems success.

2. Understand why you are hired

This one is connected with the first. If you understand what the company deems success, you can more easily understand why the company believed you were ideal to become successful in the role.

Understand the expectations of you as an employee.

3. Be Conservative

On the first day you do not know the culture or what is allowed in terms of dress.

So the safe bet is to be conservative.

Here is my first day outfit:

PicsArt_1400105451091[1]

I went with navy pant and a royal blue blazer. I added some personality with the polka dot top- I can’t stand being completely boring! But i choose a simple bun look with no jewellery.

Don’ts

1. Compare old job to new

Either way it can give the wrong impression. If your comparisons put your old job in a good light- coworkers will wonder why you left the old job? If you compare your old job in a negative light- well put simply, you look like a complainer.

This comparison syndrome also creates a distinction between you and the company reminding people you are new. You are supposed to be seamlessly assimilating.

2. Don’t try to change things

You may innocently be talking about your old position because you believe the information will be helpful at your new job. But you are the rookie, still learning and likely not seeing the whole picture.

You are simply a sponge in the first few days or weeks at the new job. No one expects you, or wants you to turn the place upside down. Your job is to observe, learn, and later make an informed suggestion.

3. Don’t expect hand-holding

Obviously you are new and need guidance. But don’t expect that your manager is there to tell you what to do. Instead see it as you providing help for the manager to get things done.

The difference in perspective is the difference between:

the employee who when finished takes a break

and the employee who when finished asks the manager what else is needed?

Whether this initiative is something you can keep up is beyond the point…it is merely a good idea to show initiative in the beginning and hopefully throughout your employment!

Lastly: don’t be late. But that point should be moot by now.

You Should Thrift.

After my last post I realized most of my outfit was thrifted items. Neat!

But …I actually used to be a thrifting snob. But one day I figured out it that it is great for shopping on a budget. A guilt free way to subdue a shopping craving. You can walk in with under $50 dollars and walk out with bags full.

Have you ever considered thrifting? Cause you should!

Check out some of my thrifted outfits:

PicsArt_1399397079123[1]

After one of my first trips to “Goodwill” – I came back with such a haul that i could make a couple outfits with them.

And there they are!

Thrifted items: Sheer blouse, flare skirt, peak toe heels, striped button shirt, black purse, and fitted skirt.

Not too shabby eh?!

 PicsArt_1399397104840[1]

This outfit has two of my favourite thrifted pieces:You have an adorable checkered sweater, with this royal blue hounds tooth skirt.

LOVE!

PicsArt_1399397576880[1]

When you enter the business world, you feel the need to have a business wardrobe. Well a budget friendly way to get one is to check out your local thrift store.

This outfit has two thrifted items: the finely checkered pant, and the bold blue top.

Not only can you find some great outfits through thrifting but you can also find some great statement pieces!

PicsArt_1399397507145[1]

This gold and black purse is thrifted. When i found it, my jaw literally dropped. It was beautiful and i clutched at it while i continued to shop. No one was taking this beautiful baby from me.

PicsArt_1399397532262[1]

This wool skirt is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe, and it was thrifted!

I hate hanging up skirts and dresses for the winter, but this wool skirt keeps me fashionably warm even in a skirt through the coldest winters.

PicsArt_1399397473229[1]

Lastly this pink scarf and leather jacket are thrifted items. And they are some of my “most-worn” items in my wardrobe.

I love leather jackets, and this thrifted one is my warmest and therefore worn a great deal.

And this scarf is so pretty it always adds a lot to any outfit i pair it with.

There are treasures hiding in thrift stores. All you got to do is find them!

Stay tuned soon for a “how to: thrift” post.

I’ve been told by my local thrift store cashier that: “I always find the best items! Every time she looks, she never finds anything”

Well I’ll pass my secrets on to you!
