Did Carrie from Sex in the City have it right all along?!
“Don’t buy me a ring…just get me a REALLY big closet”
carries dream closet
….
I’ve been dreaming about a walk in closet big enough to fit all my clothes for a while. Instead of having my clothes scattered and stored in different parts of my condo like I do now. So I thought I would do a post about my dream closet…but a realistic version. Something attainable!

I thought if I was going to shop for my own closet…where would I go? Immediately I thought of target and Ikea. So here is my dream closet made from those two very places!

I got my colour scheme from the Rug. My favourite colours are purple and blue featured in the rug. It also gives multiple other colours to bounce off of.

I would want my purses stored high…because I don’t change up my purses as often. So I would want them stored out of the way but still on display high above eye level.

All my “unmentionables” and clothes that need to be folded away would go in this multi-drawer dresser. I would use decor suitable to the colour scheme on top the dresser; but the decor would also have to be functionable. The bowl would be used as a jewellery bowl. The clock would remind me that- I need to choose an outfit or I’m going to be late for work! haha

I would have a cushy chair to relax while I think or Instagram my outfits for the day! A round cushion stool to lay out my outfits. Or to sit down to change my shoes or put on tights! Like the Cushy stool, the teal roll-able stool would do triple duty for scarves, belts, and jewellery.

I would store my shoes to the ceiling in the dark wood storage container. They would be beautifully show cased like my dresses and shirts on the simple steel rod. I wanted the closet to feel open. Often I have clothes everywhere because I cannot find something to wear. The lived- in and relaxed feeling could easily have clothes ontop the furniture and not feel completely dirty. Compared to a closed wardrobe- with one item out of place in those closets…the whole closet feels messed.

Last but not least…the purple manikin. I would intend to use this to layout my outfits…although I doubt that would happen. haha. But none the less it would be perfect for outfit shots and pretty decor none the less!

Closet Budget
When mentally budgeting for a closet.
I thought a reasonable amount to spend on a closet would be $1,500.
The grand total for my Dream Closet?!
Drum Roll…..
$1,608.77 + Tax
Wow. Not Bad.
I mean look at everything I got:
Five pieces of furniture…storage solutions…and decor!
That is exactly why I like Ikea and Target.
Cute Items on a budget!
What do you think?
What pieces would you want in your closet?!

Thrift Thursday- Make it your own

It is yet again another thursday…

And Me and Bertha from chicandacademica.com are at it again!

This Thrifty Thursday we decided to find a thrifted item and make it our own.

Sometimes when you find an item at goodwill, there may be something that is just a little off.

Like a theft-tag still attached to the clothing…which I talked about in another post called “how to thrift”.

Or it may be missing some buttons.

Or needs a new zipper.

or may fit a little wrong.

Well to show that you can always take those items home and make them your own.

We decided this thursday to prove it!

This is the item I found:

20140818_215946[1]

I fell in love with the plaid pattern.

All I imagined was a super cute “school girl look” in a high-waisted mid-knee plaid skirt.

Now when I tried on the skirt… that’s not the look I saw. haha!

PicsArt_1408576218755[1]

Although the length of skirt is “in” right now.

The heaviness of the skirt made it feel like I should be churning butter on the farm.

Not exactly the look I wanted. haha!

So I thought it would be perfect for this blog post.

PicsArt_1408626341709[1]

With 6 inches chopped and a new hemline. This is the look I got:

The cost of the skirt was $6.00.

The cost of the alterations? 40 dollars.

Umm.. What?!

40 dollars to chop off 6 inches and do a hem?

For 46 dollars I could have bought a new skirt- easily!

But i was on a timeline and decided to just go for it anyways

So my verdict?

DIY

I need to invest in Sewing Classes.

There are actually classes being held in Mississauga across the street from my home in January.

Screw You- Stitch It

disclaimer:

(…actually they were super nice to me.Even though the earliest they could fit me in was friday- she was willing to squeeze me in for next day- for no extra charge)

BUT

I need to do some research and find a much more budget friendly alterations location

I remember the days when my grandmother was the best place to stop for some quick fixes.

Well it looks like I need to do some shopping and research for a new location!

Want to see how miss Bertha’s “Thrifty Thursday- make it your own” turned out?

Check out this amazing transformation.

She turned a Male Dress Jacket into a Tuxedo Dress!…um wow!

All on her own too!!

Loverly- Courthouse wedding Styling Challenge

Loverly- Courthouse wedding

Wedding dress

I never partook in wedding-play as a child. I haven’t dreamt about my wedding dress and ring every waking moment. But I can appreciate the romantic side of wedding nuptials. Although I find the notions of romance often get swallowed up by the circus of the wedding party.

Therefore when I was asked to style a wedding by the digital wedding BFF lover.ly– I was very upfront with my hesitation- Claiming that I would be happy merely to go to the courthouse for my hypothetical wedding rather than the traditional big wedding or beach side wedding. I was encouraged none the less to style a wedding at a courthouse.  Completely intrigued to test my styling techniques, I happily obliged.

Ok so how do you style a look for a courthouse? My first thought was to go with a short dress. But the dresses did not feel special enough; they felt as though they took the ceremony out of the wedding. So I started to search for a new dress that felt formal yet easy and comfortable. I came across this beautiful blush coloured corset bhldn dress. I also thought that the blush colour was perfect for this non-traditional wedding.

Even though the wedding setting isn’t traditionally formal; courthouses are often in the grandest or oldest buildings in the city. They often have grand architecture or at least great character. To match this feeling I wanted the bride’s look to feel just as royal. Therefore the formality of a long wedding dress would not feel “out of place” in its surroundings. I also choose to go with a sparkly headpiece instead of a veil because it was untraditional yet royal.

I didn’t think the bride’s look should have a tonne of jewellery even though I found more than a few pieces that would look amazing. I wanted her look to not only be non-traditional and royal, I wanted it to be comfortable and easy. Therefore I didn’t choose a necklace because it would compete with the bedazzlement on the corset of the dress. But I did pick a pair of low hanging pearl earrings that added a classic touch, but still allowed her bare skin to speak to the simplicity of the look.

For a shoe I knew i had to go with an open strappy heel. A closed heel would feel too heavy for the dress. I needed the heel to be comfortable as well and the ankle strap makes the heel an easy wear. Lastly it matched the sparkly blush toned wedding dress perfectly.

All together it creates my non-traditional, simple and chic, royal wedding look.

Beautiful Surprises

You can’t plan life…it just happens.

I’ve always been about the plans…doing research, preparing, knowing the ins and outs before making a decision.

Planning out my life path.

But some of my major life changes …my best and most precious moments…have been surprises.

The first: University of Toronto

I failed two attempts to apply to University of Toronto- in my eyes the holy grail of education.

In my last stitch effort to get a higher education, I applied one last time to a different field with little faith.

In the midst of sun bathed- windows down- kind of summer…I got the letter.

It was bigger than all the others. I knew right away.

I was accepted to University of Toronto …in Mississauga.

Umm where’s Mississauga?

This acceptance letter brought me down a path I didn’t expect.

To a educational field i didn’t plan and to a place i’d soon call home.

i graduated

The Second: Life Partner

During the summer months waiting for my acceptance letter…I met my life partner.

Of course I didn’t know it then though.

I thought it was just a fevered summer affair.

He was even warned “she doesn’t do the boyfriend thing.”

Well he proved them wrong.

He definitely took me by surprise.

cute later

The Third: Buying a House

Me and my man had just started to have conversations about saving up for a house.

When we received a phone call. Our landlord was selling the apartment and bringing someone by to look at the place.

Noooo! We didn’t want to move.

After an astonished discussion…do we move on this opportunity? Do we put up an offer?

we did- and we got it.

WE’RE HOME OWNERS!

My next big surprise is probably what it actually means to be home owners! EEK!

It’s beautiful where life can take you.

This isn’t what I planned out…where I thought I would be in life.

But life is full of beautiful surprises!

My wife is not the same woman that I married | The Matt Walsh Blog

I came home today and came across this title for a blog article across my news feed.

Intrigued I took a read. It speaks about marriage and divorce. How the statement, “sometimes people change,”  is not a legitimate reason for ending a marriage. Let’s face it, you gave up. People are always changing, you didn’t choose to marry that person only for who they were that one day you married them. You choose to marry them and be united to them for the rest of your life and whoever they will be during that journey.

I think people have forgotten that marriage is about choosing a LIFE PARTNER. My grandmother, who was married to my grandfather since she was 19 to the day he passed, once told me: “love isn’t enough.” That’s because it’s much harder than that. It’s about always trying, always putting the relationship first. Your partner is always changing, so you should always be trying to learn more about your partner and how they’ve changed- never get complacent.  Sure you may know her “chapter 1” so well that you could tell it to her, but there are always new pages being written.

Marriage is just as much about the structure: sacrifice, compromise, struggle, and support as it is about the mushy-romantic centre: joy and love.

You can read Mark Walsh’s post below:

My wife is not the same woman that I married | The Matt Walsh Blog.

Ps. Here is a quote I loved from the blog:

“sometimes i can read her like a book, but sometimes she wears an expression I’ve never seen. Sometimes she smiles like the world is telling a joke that only she understands”

pss.

Like the “Matt Walsh Blogger” I may not be speaking from a point of experience like 30-40 years of marriage. But I have chosen my life partner, and we’ve been together for close to seven years and living together for over 5. We’ve made it through doing it long distance, through money struggles, through moving twice including to a new city, and what I’m most proud of is the “growing pains” of becoming adults as me and my man surprisingly met when I was 19. What comforts me is I know that we can change drastically as people and still hold onto each other through it all.
